Finding a Side Hustle

Finding ways to earn a little extra cash during the school year

There are hundreds of ways to make money as a college student and yet there never seems to be enough time to fit them into the schedule. On the other side of things, it’s possible that you just don’t know where to start when it comes to making a little extra cash.

Here is a list of some of the ways that you can start to earn money and stay afloat during the school year.

ON CAMPUS

Workday

This one is at the top of the list because there are always new postings of jobs on campus. Calvin has just implemented a brand-new system called Workday where you can find part-time jobs on campus that are meant for students to fill. They are often flexible with class schedules and easy to apply to. You can head to the page that highlights jobs for students and find 60+ jobs right now!

Apply for Scholarships

The most expensive part of college is the tuition itself. While Calvin offers academic scholarships and awards automatically, there are over 1000 named scholarships that get awarded to students each year. Calvin’s website also includes links to outside scholarship sources that have been providing students with over 1 million dollars in scholarship money every year.

Sell Old Textbooks

There are lots of places to sell old textbooks, whether that’s on Facebook marketplace, the bookstore, directly to other students, or a third-party website.

OFF CAMPUS

Donate Plasma

It’s possible to earn $600 dollars for your first month by donating plasma twice a week. It requires little from you except sitting still for a time. There are multiple places around Grand Rapids that take new donors and the sign-up process is relatively easy. While the first trip may be more time consuming, many Calvin students head to plasma donation centers to earn a little extra cash.

Become a Babysitter or Dogsitter

Whether you head to a Facebook page or have a connection from a friend, there are lots of people in the city of Grand Rapids that are looking for reliable care. Petsitter.com or Care.com are two places to look at for finding pet sitting jobs around the city. There are also different Facebook pages for East Grand Rapids families that are looking for nannies and babysitters. While this is a page that you need to be invited into, there are plenty of Calvin students that could help you find the loop in.

Shipt Shopping and Door Dash

The industry for delivering food is booming right now. It’s a great way to earn money and dictating your own schedule for an average of $25 an hour. While the standard commission is not a lot of money, you earn the most through the tips that you receive.

Sell Clothes on Instagram, Facebook, or Poshmark

Creating a page to sell your own clothes or items that you may have thrifted is also a thriving side hustle that many college students are just getting into.
