Student Loans: Where to start? (Part 3)

If I have loans, where do I find them?

There is a number of ways to find where your loans are, but we suggest first to find your federal loans, go to https://nslds.ed.gov/:

  • Click on “Financial Aid Review” -> Accept the terms and conditions -> Log in with your FSA ID (If you don’t have one, you can easily create one) -> Once you log in, you’ll see a summary of all your federal loan data.

For me as a NEXUS coach, my easiest way I suggest finding your loans is to simply run a credit report on your trusted credit report website, for example, Credit Karma. You can go to https://www.creditkarma.com/:

  • One key thing to note is that it is a false idea that checking your credit score will hurt you. Checking it on Credit Karma will not hurt your credit score.
  • Simply click log in (or create an account if you do not have one) -> Enter your information (it is a secure and private website) -> Then click on accounts -> scroll to the bottom and see all of your loans.
  • The nice thing about Credit Karma specifically is that behind all of the “Federal Loan” buttons there is a “/ OSLA” or “/ *fill in word*.” That word behind the slash is your loan servicer which is something you should know. Another way to check your servicer is to go to https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans#how-to-pay -> log in and see your servicer

To get more information and to dig further into any further questions you may have on student loans we would love for you to stop by our office behind Peets (HL 218) anytime. We also suggest if you need more resources or specific help, head over to the Financial Aid Office in The Spoelhof Center or shoot them an email/phone call. We both would love to assist and help you.
